Perks of Being a Librarian

Ok, so there are many strange and unusual perks of being a librarian, but one of the best of course is discovering books I would have never seen anywhere else. Look what I found today:

Alice herself is such an inspiration --one of my all-time favorite book characters as a child. Who knew there was a cookbook???? I sure didn't --until today of course! Now this book is OLD. I think the publication date is 1976. I mean the book has checkout stamps in it and a card in the front. It kinda smells and the paper is definitely yellowing. It is the very last copy in Columbus, but this book is delightful in so many ways. Some of the recipes include: 'Eat Me' Cakes, Pebble Cakes, Ambidextrous Mushrooms, Not 'Too Much Pepper' Soup and even Looking-Glass Milk!

And as if the recipes themselves are not enough, the cookbook is laced with excerpts from the book (I must reread it now)! The best part is the final step in each recipe. For example, the final step for making 'Drink Me' Soup reads "Eat slowly to prevent shrinking fast." Every recipe has something pithy like that! The only down-side of this book is that most of the recipes do not actually sound all that tasty. One recipe (Mock Turtle Soup) even calls for 1/2 a calf's head and another for a freshly butchered and drained hare! Blechhhh!!! Nevertheless, I feel I must try at least one recipe. I'll keep you posted...

I have a friend in the UK who collects all things Alice. I'm going to show him to this page. I wonder if he owns this book?
